"Finding Allisen Merino Aja of Introspecs was kismet, since the two women shared the same aesthetic sensibilities."

Olson and Jones Construction was Allisen’s clear choice for this project, given the home’s location – Historic Laurelhurst – and the fact the detailed remodel was going to touch several spaces in the home, not just the kitchen. “They are one of the high integrity firms in Portland and it felt like the right fit,” says Allisen.

Olson and Jones delivered Introspecs designs, inverting the previous material palette of dark wood kitchen cabinetry and maroon granite countertops, which Emily describes as claustrophobic, with crisp white built-ins with aplomb. “They were fantastic,” says Emily, “incredibly well organized, detail oriented, responsive, and letting us know exactly what they were doing every day.”

"Designer Allisen Larsen shares details about what inspires her and how living in Oregon influences her design choices."

Kristina and Patrick needed more space. The young couple loved to entertain and host guests for extended stays, but the compact floor plan of their home in Northeast Portland didn’t give them quite enough room. They decided to get creative and look beyond the walls of their home by custom-building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on their lot.

The ADU also shows off Allisen’s impeccable taste. Rich, salvaged woods and vintage furnishings become the centerpiece of her design, creating a contemporary look that’s warm and inviting to each member of the family — a space where Patrick can watch a basketball game with the guys, Kristina can enjoy some alone time and the couple can bond with their child for a family movie night.

"We wanted to listen to the simple, clean lines of their ranch home and give it a lift in response to RB/A’s design of the raised vault through to the dining room,” says Introspecs’ owner Allisen Larsen."

Whitsell, along with his wife Wendy, purchased the circa-1965 daylight ranch in Portland’s forested Sylvan-Highlands neighborhood in 1991—taken by its proximity to downtown and adjoining 10-acre greenspace. Located on a cul-de-sac, it was the perfect place to raise their children, and the Whitsells completed various small updates over the years before deciding they wanted a big change. They spent a year mulling over purchasing a new home, but in the end settled on a major remodel, complete with an open floor plan and beautifully captured views, with locally based firms Richard Brown Architect (RB/A) and Introspecs.
